Tingly mouth? Fuzzy tongue?

Itchy Mouth

Having an itchy mouth can be a very uncomfortable symptom. It could be described as a tingling or burning sensation. It may be experienced in isolation or in combination with swelling of the lips or face, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, itchy sensation in ears, watery eyes.

An itchy mouth can be caused by allergies, viral or fungal infections. In the case of allergies, an itchy mouth in isolation of other symptoms can indicate oral allergy syndrome, also known as pollen-food syndrome. This condition can occur in individuals with pollen allergies. It is caused by the body cross-reacting to proteins in certain raw fruits and vegetables, which are similar in structure to those of pollens. The most common reactions come from the following:

Birch pollen – apple, almond, carrot, celery, cherry, hazelnut, kiwi, peach, pear, plum

Grass pollen: celery, melons, oranges, peaches, tomato

Ragweed pollen: banana, cucumber, melons, sunflower seeds, zucchini

An unpleasant sensation oral allergy syndrome is mild in most cases, particularly if the only symptom experienced is an itchy mouth. However, please do be aware that if the itchiness continues beyond the mouth or produces swelling of the mouth/throat, or if you have a history of serious allergic reactions it is important you seek emergency medical attention. Anaphylaxis can begin with this symptom. (link to page on anaphylaxis)
